What is Quad MFx4+MISO?
Flex3Drive Quad MFx4 Multi Filament system is a Direct Drive MISO (multi-in-single-out) filament extrusion system comprising a 2+2 quad stack of our new Flex3Drive G7 extruders coupled with a new all metal hi temp hi flow 4into1 hotend.
What can it do?
Print multi colour decorative or multi material engineering objects. Extrude at volumetric rates exceeding 300mm^3/s. Extrude two or more filaments simultaneously. Use nozzle diameters up to 4mm and layer heights up to 3mm. Blend colours or print very large objects very quickly with increased strength.
Nozzle and Diameters
Easy and quick one handed nozzle changes! The MISO hotend is compatible with nozzles that meet the v6 standard with an M6x1 thread. This includes E3D and CHT nozzles. The MISO can be used with any nozzle diameter from 0.25mm upto 4mm diameter. Printing objects with larger nozzles enables thicker walls with fewer perimeters making for a much increased part strength and greatly reduced printing times.
Will it fit my printer?
The Quad MFx4 with MISO can be easily installed on nearly all 3D printers including Bed Slingers, CoreXY and Delta style machines. The addition of extra stepper drivers may be required to drive a total of 4 extruders.
How does it work?
The 4 way extruder stack is driven by 4 independent flexible shafts, pushing filament into the MISO hotend. Printer firmware is easily configured for multi extruder single nozzle configurations. Using multi part files, or painting the STL's in Prusa Slicer and assigning extruder numbers to each colour, firmware takes care of the rest.
Differences compared to MMU or Tool changers.
Both MMU and Toochangers have their merits and drawbacks as does MISO when compared with each other.
MMU and Tool changes can only extrude one filament at a time, and generally limited to flow rates compatible with nozzles upto 1mm diameter. With the MISO 4into1 hotend much higher melt rates enable faster polymer flow with larger nozzle diameters. Additionally two or more filaments can be extruded together using Quad MFx4 and MISO hotend.
Quad MFx4 with MISO is a very cost effective multi filament solution as it uses fewer major components compared to a tool changer style approach.
MMU and toolchangers cannot extrude two or more filaments together, whether for mixing, or for achieving higher flow rates with larger nozzles. The MISO can do this very effectively.
MMU are not optimal for flexible filaments due to the bowden tube approach they are based on. The QuadMFx4 is direct drive thus well suited to even the softest flexible filaments.
MISO can print mixed materials but not with a combination of materials that have a large difference between their printing temperatures.
MISO is currently limited to four filaments but these can be changed manually mid print to create prints with more than four colours. Of course colours can also be mixed without manual filament changes.
